NASA - good news from Arctic

Bookmark and Share
Despite the gloomy prediction that the Arctic will be completely free of ice in summers by 2025 (in the BBC’s non-dramatic “drama” Burn Up) or by 2040 (in the latest IPCC report), the latest data from NASA satellites seem to show that the Arctic ice has started to recover.

Greens always get publicity when they show film from the North Pole in summers, even though the Arctic ice pack cracks up every year. For a century, cruise ships have gone to the North Pole in summer and surprised passengers by sitting at the top of the world.

In 2005 the summer ice in the Arctic was smaller in extent than ever seen before – causing ultra-gloomy predictions from the usual quarters that soon the entire ice sheet would be melted.

However, in 2006, 2007 and 2008 the ice has begun to recover. It certainly does not mean that the Arctic is back to normal – far from it – but it is a good sign that, yet again, the doom-mongers are too pessimistic.
